Blank Desktop (Blue Screen)

I have a Sony Laptop using XP.

When loading up the desktop is blank and the only way I
can access programs files is by using CTRL ALT DEL to
bring the task manager up and accessing from there.

Any ideas on whats wrong?
 
My brother was on it last night and a lighting storm
caused a power cut.

It was like that when I loaded it up today.
