Blackout

I just bought a system with vista and sometimes if I close the lid or just
put it to sleep and try to bring it back it stays black. The power light
stays on and it doesn't matter if its plugged in or not. I've tried messing
with the power options and resetting to Dells power plan and sometimes it
will come right up and other's it wont. I have tried hitting every key and
pushing power button quickly.

"Just bought a system" means it is brand-new, right? Since you mention
Dell, call their tech support immediately. Do not wait. It could be
faulty hardware.

Thats what I thought. Ever try to talk to tech support from Dell.
Worthless...
Guy told me to restore which definately will not work either. I put
computer in safe mode and it seems to not do it. Of course it cuts all the
options out, so which option could it be.

A fresh install / restore isn't a bad idea, just to prove it's not a
software/config problem.

I'm not sure if this is that same problem but by default my Vista Home
Premium was set to send the system to sleep when the lid was closed, even
plugged in. I changed the plugged in setting to "do nothing" and it solved
my awakening issue. If you want to look at those settings go to :

Control Panel -> Mobile PC -> Power Options

On the left sidebar will be a link that says "Choose what closing the lid
does".

This is a problem with Vista's driver allocation to fix it do the following;
1. Open â€Computer managementâ€
2. Open “Device Managerâ€
3. Expand “System Devicesâ€
4. Right Click “ACPI Lidâ€
5. Click “Update Driverâ€
6. Click “Browse Computerâ€
7. Click “Let me pick from a list on my computerâ€
8. Un tick “Show Compatible Hardwareâ€
9. Scroll to the bottom of the right hand box and click “Volume Managerâ€
10. Click “Yes†when Windows prompts you with security warnings
11. Reboot when Vista prompts you to do so
