blackout screen in vista

I recently upgraded from Vista Business to Ultimate. Several times, I've
experienced a blacked out screen, with white wavy lines running across, while
running different programs. It goes back to normal within a second or so. Is
this something that I can fix?

I doubt that this is a Vista issue. Try updating your video card drivers.
