black screen using SP1

Hi.

I've got two machines running Vista

1. running Vista Ultimate with SP! - no real problems (except for the
stupid amount of time it takes still to move files around compared to
XP! and getting .com surrogate errors)

2. running Vista Home Premium with SP1 - this one seems fine but
sometimes, especially if it's been switched on but not logged on for a
while, when I log on it just has a black screen but seems to be
running okay.
I've now discovered that Ctrl-Alt-Del will bring up the dialogue box
and selecting Task Manager seems to correct the problem.

The black screen never appeared before upgrading to SP1 and both
copies are legit.

Any help with the following would be greatly appreciated.

1. Any ideas why I'm now getting the black screen and is there any way
of stopping it from occuring?
2. I've tried upgrading all the codecs but still have the .com
surrogate errors - any new ideas for fixing it?

thanks
