Black screen and shuts down randomly from cd boot

Will it boot with only keyboard, mouse and monitor connected?

My win xp sp2 machine goes to a black screen when I log on, sometimes
the desktop and icons appear first.
I have tried to boot from the win cd but the machine then just switches off
some time after the menu has appeared.
It is a dual boot machine with Linux which is running fine, that's how
I'm sending this post.
Any suggestions
