Black preview screen?

Hey, I'm trying to make a movie out of some AVI clips I've captured on an
archos DVR and I've been having a couple of problems.

Some clips in avi format (divX format I'm pretty sure) Don't give me the
option to go into the middle of the clip, it'll stop the clip and make me
start watching from the beginning again. I'm wondering if thats a problem
with my DivX codec because I can't even watch them in WMP.

The main problem I'm facing is when I split an AVI clip and put it into the
timeline, I am unable to watch the Timeline, because the preview is black.
Audio plays fine, but no video shows up. I looked at other posts here and
only found people had the same problem when playing MPEG-2 files, and I am
sure these are DivX AVI files. They do play fine when looking at the split
clip and everything, and I can export the timeline fine with one clip, but I
can't preview from the storyboard or add fades and transitions.

If you have a way to change this, that'd really help me. Thanks.

Movie Maker often has problems handling Divx and Xvid encoded AVI files....
my rule of thumb is... if I can get it to my timeline as a single clip, I'll
render it to a new DV-AVI file or high quality WMV to be used as the source
file in projects.

Even then, Movie Maker will often crash during the rendering... if it
crashes on me 5 times in a row, I give up and convert the file with another
app.

See the Importing Source Files > Video > AVI page of my website.
