BILL GATES

Are you really so stupid that you think posting in ALL UPPER CASE letters on
a public newsgroup will somehow reach the desk of Bill Gates? I suppose you
are. Just shows once more the only ones having problems with SP2 are those
that don't have a clue.

Who knows? Maybe Bill Gates surfs around here late at night on his
Mac when his wife is asleep, and posts under an assumed name.
Maybe you've received computer advice from Mr. Gates himself.

Hi Bonnie,

Several of the MVP`s has listed sites on how to prepare
your computer for SP2 installations. I used Jupiter Jones
site as my main template for creating my pre-installion
checklist that I used on each computer prior to installing
SP2. Microsoft site has instructions as well, but I don`t
have the link saved.

Jack,

Do you always decide after one bad experience or bad
problem, that it is not good and never do it again? One
failure does not count saying that SP2 is bad and
shouldn`t be installed. Like already stated in my re-post
to you, I have installed it on many machines, even at my
company`s systems and we are not having any problems.

Yes you could have had your system 100% ready for the
install, but that doesn`t factor in that your system is in
100% perfect condition. A problem could arise from a bad
disk cluster or sector after the installation to cause the
problem.

On my W2K system, I had a problem with one program, cause
of the version of my video driver, I followed the
company`s suggestion and used an older one. What I got was
BSOD, because of the driver. I found a newer driver than
my original and now the W2K system works fine.

I have seen some brand new computers with XP SP1 start to
have system file problems and they are well maintained
systems, after running disk doctor, found few sectors and
clusters bad. So don`t go blaming SP2 for a problem on
one system.

As stated by others, you rarely see people posting here
with their success`s, only those who has problems. Most
problems are cause the user didn`t properly prepare or
didn`t properly protect their systems. I have huge
success with installing SP2, but didn`t bother to post it,
cause its not a problem.

Don`t go accusing and insulting the MVP`s, they are doing
great work helping people out with their problems. SP2 is
as perfectly safe as it is perfectly safe to go to bed at
night. But sometimes those who go to sleep, don`t wake up
the next morning, life is full of unexpected surprises.

I can't help but wonder why it is, that some of the folks that have the most
trouble, and are most vocal, claim to be some sort of IT professional, keeps
hundreds of computers running, etc.

Besides, if it is that bad, you should be happy making money on all those
200+ client machines that need help.

Don Burnette.

My checklist was as following, and I did not have to read pages of
instructions to come up with it - I used reasonable common sense.

I did do the following just prior to installing XP:

Checked for adware/spyware with Ad Aware 6.0
Checked for latest updates for my peripherals
Checked for latest updates for my applications
Updated my AV software virus definition files.
Ran a virus scan.
Did a disk cleanup, cleaning out temp files and cookies.
Did a chkdsk on my system drive.
Imaged my system partition with PowerQuest Drive Image to external hard
drive. ( if no imaging software, I would strongly recommend , at the least,
backing up all important data files, and settings ). Take precaution when
deciding what to back up, make triple sure you have any data files that are
very important to you backed up in some way, either to another partion, hard
drive, cdr, floppy.

Downloaded SP2 network version ( complete 266 mb file) from windows update
catalogue site.
Disabled my AV software.
Installed SP2. I think it took about 15 minutes for me, maybe 20 at the
most.

After installation:
Ran disk defragger on system partition. Made sure AV software was activated
again. Checked my main applications and programs I run to make sure no
issues.

No problems, and my computer appears to be a little snappier. No conflicts
with any of the security features, matter of fact i have a hardware nat
firewall with my router for my cable internet, and have the XP firewall on,
and no issues. I also really like the pop up blocker.

My thought at the moment is that it is possible, though difficult, to
make something fool-proof, but not to make it know-all-proof
