Three pages of instructions on what to, what not to, how to and how not to
install a stupid SP is asinine!

The instructions for installing should be a simple 'Click here'!

If you want instructions that are that simple, never, ever use any
device more complicated than a toaster. And be careful doing that -
toasters get hot. If you're too lazy to learn how to safely use and
maintain a computer, why don't you just donate it to a charity, where
it might do some good?

How???? do you deduce that I don't keep a maintained computer from what I
wrote! Answer - You can't! A matter of fact is that keeping over 200
client's home and small office computers maintained is what I do for a
living!

Are you really so stupid that you think posting in ALL UPPER CASE letters on
a public newsgroup will somehow reach the desk of Bill Gates? I suppose you
are. Just shows once more the only ones having problems with SP2 are those
that don't have a clue.

Jack,

Sorry if I misunderstood your post. I am simply trying to help people.

Best regards,
R

Then get your service pack from your Toys"R"Us PC, if you want it so simple!

I'm not too sure sp2 didn't!!

Then you certainly shouldn't find the routine preparations for
installing a service pack particularly complicated. Your posts are
not consistent and are, in fact, mutually exclusive. You cannot
possibly be an IT professional, making a living in the business, *and*
find preparing for a service pack installation difficult.

Nowhere did I say it was 'difficult! I can follow the instructions just
fine. My point is I shouldn't have to follow three pages of instructions to
be able to install it, jump through more pages of instructions on setting it
up followed by hours retweaking and configuring my computer the way I like
it!

That aside - I did follow the instructions ONE time and it rendered a
perfectly good, VERY well maintained, system worthless to the point of not
even booting past the BIOS splash screen.

Just last evening I sent a mass emailing telling clients, regarding sp2, -
"If it (your computer) ain't broken, don't fix it"!

And you call yourself a professional?

The vast majority of Windows users simply don't know that their systems are
broken. The fact is, *all* installations of pre-SP2 XP are horribly,
horribly broken.

Then you did a mis-service to your clients. I hope they realize it.

You must not be a very good IT professional then. I have
followed the pre-install steps for XP SP2 and have
installed it on 2 of my 3 personal computers (1 is W2K),
60 work computers (only 25 left to do) and on 3 friends
computers. I have had no problems at all with it. I made
sure each computer was prepared and the installation of
SP2 went smoothly and the systems are running with no
problem. I feel sorry to those that you told them not to
install SP2. Also I didn`t have 3 pages to read over for
preparing the computers, all I had to do was read one
page, then I created a pre-install checklist and used that
when updating each computer.

Jack;
Good for you a sample of one is conclusive proof SP-2 is bad for
everyone.
If your customers listen to your advice, you will make a lot of money.
Do you use similar job security techniques in all your correspondence?

I am not sure where you get "three pages of instructions to be able to
install it"
Perhaps three or more pages of reading to verify you are set.
But that should have been expected if you are an IT professional.
Less than one page of instructions for actually installing SP-2.

There are many guides for helping to ensure a successful installation.
Much information including the Service Pack Installation Checklist can
be found here:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/spackins.htm

SP-2 is not for everyone, but using a sample of one is insufficient to
prove any point.

where do you get this pre install instructions
are they there with the download
I have not done it yet

too many hurricanes visiting FL to have to deal with this
in case I have trouble

but I did not know there were pre install instructions
that would help me

thanks
