Best free newsreader?

Harry Bloomfield

Hi,

I'm presently using Gravity as my newsreader, but I'm having the odd
problem occur during use. I wondered if there might be something just
as capable about, but perhaps a little reliable?

I use the same version of Gravity as you and have tried all the others I
know of before deciding.
However I suppose it depends how you use it.
Asking for best newsreader is like asking what is the best car?

I'm happy with Gravity, apart from the fact that a few times it
suffered a database corruption and a regular problem with it crashing
after resuming from hibernation.

Try MesNews?
I made the translation in Dutch and I simply love l-) this prog, this
after using Agent for years.

http://mesnews.no-ip.com (you will also find a Dutch and French faq
there.)

freeware English/French/Dutch.
(for the moment no faq in English)
Multi-server.
HTML switch on/off :)
Possibility for x-faces AND "faces, even in color!)

They have a newsgroup: mesnews.international
server: news.zoo-logique.org
login: zoo
psw: entrer
In this one you can request information in English or other languages

On the same server the newsgroup: mesnews
Only in French

Just have a look ;-)

I've been meaning to ask, how do you do the X-Faces in color?

Using a 957-byte, non-standard, non-RFC-compliant header. Please,
stick with the standard X-Face.

Hello, dszady (?)

First you must downloas a zip file, you can do this on my site;

http://home.tiscali.be/a.beguin/face.zip

Unzip this in the file MesNews/Plugins.

Then you need a prog like IrfanView to cofigure the image you want to
use, they must be not bigger than 48 by 48 and maximum 744 bytes. They
must be in PNG format, no other.
When they are ready you may put them in the subfile "faces" within the
"plugin" file.

Afterwards, in Mesnews you go to settings/management of the plugins and
mark change face color V2.1.

That should do it.
I'm not expert in those things, only translator, if you need more help,
put your question in the MN international group.

It's late and going to bed :)

Bye,

Alain

Hi,

I'm presently using Gravity as my newsreader, but I'm having the odd
problem occur during use. I wondered if there might be something just
as capable about, but perhaps a little reliable?

1. News Xpress: I've been happily using News Xpress 2.01 for years,
but I don't do anything other than read articles and
print/save/archive/followup as appropriate for those that interest me.
That is, I'm not into any of the binary stuff, so don't know how (or
even if) News Xpress handles such things.

It should also be recognised that NX is frozen in time as the author
(Ken Ng) abandoned it when he finished his course work (or so I'm
told) back in about 1997.

I don't know if it will work under Windows XP. It will with 9x and
ME; and ISTR I've used it under 2K (but that might be a brain fart).

Here's the users' support site for download, FAQ, manual ...
<http://www.malch.com/nxfaq.html>

2. X There is also something called Xnews (XN) which I believe
was developed by Luu Tran as a "clone" of NX and is still supported by
him <http://xnews.newsguy.com/>. It's written in Delphi and seems to
support the full range of Windows stuff from 9x through XP, including
NT and 2K. It's said to be 100% GNKSA 2.0 compliant.

I've never tried it as I'm still happy with NX. However, XN has very
active user support and discussion ongoing in news.readers.software.

Cheers, Phred.

This program looks so sexy! I am downloading it right now and the
screenshots look very promising. I haven't figured from them if it can
show multiple forums at the same time in MDI fashion like Xnews, but it
obviously has potential.

I prefer Gravity and it's become open-source so development should
continue. I have tried them all.
