Being randomly dropped from dial-up connection

P

Palmer Calihan

Within the past several weeks I have encountered a
problem whereby I randomly get the following messages:

Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a
problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
If you were in the middle of something, the information
you were working on might be lost.
For more information about this error, click here

The system is shutting down. Please save all work in
progress and log off. Any unsaved changes will be
lost. This shutdown was initiated by NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Message:
Windows must now restart because the Remote Call
Procedure (RCP) service terminated unexpectedly.

After getting these messages my computer shuts down
within 60 seconds. Can anyone tell me what to do to
correct this problem?

Thanks

I just posted this note in another reply to "Getting kicked out" (from Kris and a response by Curt)
Curt thinks it may be a Blastor Worm virus

"I am getting the same RPC (remote procedure call) error. It has been happening since I opened the box o
my new Sony Vaio with XP Home pre-installed. I started trying to download updates last night and it consistenl
gets the error during the download. It seems to happen only downloading or when Explorer is (I guess
trying to execute an RPC.

THIS IS A REAL PAIN! How do I download the fix to a new system when it keeps going down. It makes m
wonder if the system came with the virus (if that is what is the cause). This is my first XP system - I a
very concerned. Any help?"

Unplug the machine from the network, turn on the firewall, replug the
network cable, download patches.
