Behavior of automatic updates

XP SP2 is set to download and install high priority updates automatically. I
usually get the "shield" icon in SysTray telling me it's downloading, showing
status, and asking if I'm ready to install. I don't recall any other details
from that icon.

But now IE7 is being foisted on me as a "critical" update. I don't want to
go to it yet. I'm hearing too much about bugs. If I do a manual Windows
Update I have no problem avoiding it.

But what will the automatic updates behavior do here? Does it in fact give
me a summary of the updates it's going to install and let me choose to accept
or decline, or is it just going to end up installing IE7 if I keep it enabled?

Search using Google!
http://www.google.com/
(How-to: http://www.google.com/intl/en/help/basics.html )

Example results from a search containing:
"internet explorer 7" and automatic updates

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/updatemanagement/windowsupdate/ie7announcement.mspx

Where it states, "... Automatic Updates will only offer Internet Explorer 7
to users with local administrator accounts. Automatic Updates will notify
all such users (including those with Automatic Updates configured to
automatically download and install updates) when Internet Explorer 7 has
been downloaded and is ready to install. The notification and installation
process will not start unless and until a user who is a local administrator
logs on to the machine. Users who are not local administrators will not be
prompted to install the update and will thus continue using Internet
Explorer 6 ..."

Not sure why a single user would need the Internet Explorer 7 Blocker
Toolkit.
Seems overkill.

Seems the automatic update will give you the choice of installing or not
installing:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/updatemanagement/windowsupdate/ie7announcement.mspx

"If a user selects “Don’t Installâ€: The notification process will not
re-prompt the user to install at a later time; however, any user who is a
local administrator will be able to install Internet Explorer 7 at any time
as an optional update from the Windows Update and Microsoft Update sites or
from the Microsoft Download Center."

BTW, a useful blog is at: http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html
