Automatic Updates

I had my Automatic Updates set to "Download updates, but let me decide when
to install" and sometime today, an update came in. Since I was away from
the computer, the update shield is now missing from the taskbar and when I
choose "Turn off computer" it shows that it will install the downloaded
updates when the system is turned off. Since I believe that this update is
SP3 and I choose not to install it at this time, how can I tell Windows to
skip this install, or how can I get the shield back in the taskbar so I can
choose to not install it? It used to leave the shield in the taskbar until
I made a choice, but now it appears to no longer do that. I know that I can
chose the option to not install the update on shutdown, but when I bring
the system back up, that install update choice is there again. I just
don't want SP3 getting installed by mistake, since I'm not ready to do the
install and I'm not sure at this time I even want to.

Many thanks for any help.

What has downloaded?

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type: %windir%\windowsupdate.log
and then click OK.

Scroll down towards the bottom for the latest entries to locate what has recently
downloaded and waiting to install.

For the current listing of Security patches for this month -

If you don't want this to happen in the future (updates downloading), configure AU to
notify only.

FYI All downloaded updates go into the softwaredistribution folder under downloads if you
wish to delete any, but if you do that because you don't want them to install, you had
better change your AU settings.

Ok, from the log file, I can see that in the last two days three updates
have been downloaded: KB941569, KB936929, and KB923689 (which is SP3).
SP3 downloaded on 7/18, the other two downloaded on 7/19 (I'm wondering why
windows update never notified me of these downloads?)

There are three folders in the softwaredistribution folder that are dated
7/18 and 7/19. If I delete the one from 7/18, will it force Windows to
redo the notification if I change my update settings?

Download but notify me has always worked in the past, until now, the shield
icon has always stayed in the taskbar until I decided what I wanted to do.
But not this time.

I just need more time to prepare for the SP3 update, and yes, I've read
numerous information from microsoft on what to do before updating, etc.

Thanks for your help.

This morning the little update shield icon poppped up in my system try and
I clicked on it. It showed the two Media Format updates (KB941569 and
KB936929) which I installed. SP3 has not come up for update in Windows
update, even though it downloaded something on 7/18 (perhaps I did cancel
it at that time, I don't remember, I have 3 other computers I was dealing
with also). So all is well.

When I'm ready to do SP3, I plan to just download the file (I'll want it to
make a new slipstream disk anyhow) and take care of it then.

Thanks again.

Er..., um..., KB936929 is not a "Media Format" update, it's WinXP SP3.

If your Automatic Updates setting is Download But Notify, you must have
approved the install of KB936929 (WinXP SP3), Patty. SP3 does NOT install
without approving the EULA (even if your Automatic Updates setting is
Automatic).

Which log file please? And will deleting a log file do any harm?

Windowsupdate log file: %windir%\windowsupdate.log. I would think that
deleting the log file would not do any harm.

Sorry, that was KB923689 not KB936929 (I typed the wrong one in my post).
Service Pack 3 has not been installed. However, a folder for Service Pack
3 downloaded in the Windows softwaredistribution folder, but nothing has
been installed with that. When I check the install history at Microsoft
Update I see that today I did indeed install "Security Update for Windows
XP with Windows Media Format Runtime 9.5 and 11 (KB941569)" and "Security
Update for Windows XP with Windows Media Format Runtime 9.5 (KB923689)".
SP3 still shows up at Microsoft Update for installation and that it has not
been installed yet.

The Windowsupdate log does show:

http://au.download.windowsupdate.co..._1b719f58c511d60ecfd5aa76904241723be30c9c.exe
to
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\fd0264849c01086f3c6b505dc02dbd44\WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-Express-x86-ENU.exe
(full file).

So, it downloaded something (I show 3 odd file names in that folder) on
7/18 but I did not install it. I'm wondering if I can delete that folder
since I don't plan on installing it at this time?

Sorry for my mistake in typing the KB#.

Do NOT delete WindowsUpdate.log!!!

Oops! My mistake. Does Windows access it? There is some very cryptic
info in there. I know it can be helpful if you're trying to figure out
what went on as I did.
