Basic Home Network

T

Tim

Not sure if I have the right group for this question but here goes
anyway.

I am running two PCs, one with XP Home Edition and the other with
Win98. They both have an ethernet card attached to each other by a
cross cable.

I have set up manual IP addresses and TCP/IP protocol, file sharing
etc etc

The WinXP Firewall is disabled.

I managed to get the PCs to recognise each other using the ping
command and my sons were able to play a game against each other.

The following evening this did not work when trying to host a game on
the XP PC. I could ping the Win98 PC and also ping using 127.0.0.1 but
when I tried to ping the PCs own address I got the timeout message. I
can however get the game to work over the network if the Win98 PC
hosts the game and I can ping the WinXP PC from the Win98 PC.

I assumed that this would be a firewall problem. The WinXP PC was
running Norton Internet Security which was installed by Hewlett
Packard when I bought the PC. This means that you have to uninstall
the software using their own program as it does not appear in
Add/Remove Programs. I uninstalled this but I still could not ping the
WinXP PC.

Could anybody suggest what else I may have to look at and is it
possible that using the Hewlett Packard uninstall, the software was
not uninstalled and there is a firewall running some where ?

Thanks for any suggestions.
