Baloon popups in XP

eel that I need to know every time my wireless connects on
laptop start-up, I leave my LAN cable unplugged or (seemingly) that I need
to wipe my nose (sorry).

Is there any way I can by default stop XP from putting up the annoying
balloon popup messages, or at least make them automatically go away after
a
while so I don't have to click on them.

I have 3 children constantly "dobbing" on each other to me about self
evident things and I really wish my laptop wouldn't try to emulate them

Edit the registry. Start>Type and type regedit.

Then navigate to the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

In the right hand change the dword "NoSMBalloonTip" to a value of 0

There was no dword of that name there so I put a new one in and
rebooted but, still popups I'm afraid.

Any other ideas?

Sorry about that, here go to Kelly's site and you find the right
registry tweak.
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_reg_edits.htm

Delete the "NoSMBalloonTip" in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
from my previous post.

NoSMBalloonTip is for the Start Menu Balloon Tips.

8. DISABLE MICROSOFT PASSPORT REMINDER BALLOON TIP

Note that this one is a binary value type (all the rest were Dword)

Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MessengerService
Value Type: BINARY
Value Name: PassportBalloon
Value: 0a 00 00 00
More info: When you first install Windows XP, a balloon tip pops up
reminding you to apply for a Microsoft Passport. This disappears on its own
after 6 logons.

===========================================================================================
Create a new Binary value, or modify the existing value, called
"PassportBalloon" and set it according to the value data below.

Exit your registry, you may need to restart or log out of Windows for the
change to take effect.

(Default) REG_SZ (value not set)
PassportBalloon REG_BINARY 0a 00 00 00

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MessengerService

Registry Settings
User Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MessengerService]
Value Name: PassportBalloon
Data Type: REG_BINARY (Binary Value)
Value Data: "0a 00 00 00" = disabled

Try TweakUi.

Once installed go to:
->Taskbar and Start menu -> untick 'Enable Balloon Tips'.
