Notification area icons keep vanishing

Programs minimised to the notification area keep disapearing despite my
setting them to always appear. I have Hide Inactive Icons enabled.

FOr example i have a program that measures my megabyte usage from my IP. It
starts automatically on computer startup, minimuises automatically and gives
me a little readout of percentage dowmloads used. When I look in task
mamager the program is running but it won't display. If I chack in the
Customise NOtifications area and check it to always show it still doesn't.

A couple of other programs have the same problem; Mail Washer Pro and my
NDAS manager for example.

It seems a random thing as somethies the things will show up for a while and
then they disapear again.

Try disabling one or both of these services: SSDP Discovery Service and
uPnP Service.
Go to Start | Run | services.msc. click ok. In the right pane scroll to
these services and disable them. You could try disabling just one, then the
other, and if needed, both.

Disabling SSDP Disco worked a treat.

What happens if you disable uPnP (I left it alone)?

Great, thanks for posting the outcome. That service is only important if
you have a uPnP device. If so, then the device won't work. This is not the
same as a Plug and Play device which is what most devices are. Odds are you
don't have any uPnP devices, so that service can be disabled but since
disabling the other did it, then leave things as they are.
