I keep getting a box on my startup screen
saying 'Outdated database version. Please exit and
reinstall BackWeb'. I have no disc that came with the PC
for this.

Can anyone help please? I have a Windows XP Home PC.

Do you have an HP Printer? Some of their software uses the BackWeb client
for updates.

Yes, it can be a bad thing. In the case of the HP desktop manager, it is
benign. It will not be directed to "bad" websites or for nefarious
purposes. If you are concerned, by all means either disable it using
msconfig or uninstall the HP printer drivers and use the generic (and less
functional) windows drivers.

In this particular instance, your well-founded concern is misguided.

The only thing that it does is look for updates to any HP software that you
have installed, and will alert you when patches are available. It recently
alerted me that there was new firmware released for my printer.
