Backup Utility Problem

G

Gerald Deckard

I am trying to back up my System State to my RW G drive
and I get the following message:
"The backup file name could not be used:
"G:\Backup.bkf"
Please ensure it is a valid path, and that you have
sufficient access"

The filename and path look good and I am the
administrator.

What kind of drive is G? If it's a CD-RW, you can't back up to it using
NTBackup. Back up to your hard drive and then burn a CD.

I always see folks saying that you can't use a CD-RW with NTBackup, yet
I do it all the time. I believe the issue is attempting to use an
UNFORMATTED CD-RW in the drive. If you find the drive in NTBackup and
have a formatted CD-RW in there you should be fine. I've been using
CD-RWs with NTBackup for over a year without problem. I simply use a
packet writing program like Direct CD or InCD to make the CD resemble a
logical drive (that would support drag and drop writing). No problem.
It mystifies me that there is this absolute belief that NTBackup cannot
be used with a CD-RW. It simply isn't so. At least on my system it
isn't and I can't see what's so special about my setup. It may be that
Gerald hasn't formatted his CD yet. Give that a try first. IF G drive
is CD-RW, that could be it.

That is presumably a CD-RW drive? Use of these as direct output media
from a program is not supported by XP's inbuilt burning methods. (see
http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.htm). You need one of the third party
'packet writing' packages to support that. Even then, Backup will not
work with one beyond use of a single disk - it does not recognise a CD
as removable, and will not 'span' disks.

Right ... as I noted above, with packet writing software, you could do
it (I have Roxio Easy CD-Creator OEM installed on my Dell and this can
handle the task which, I take, is beyond the native Roxio based XP
software for burning -- really should have the packet writer too). I
didn't also note, as Alex does, that it does not recognize that a CD is
removable and thus that it can/should span multiple media. It's really
only good for small backup projects that will fit on a formated CD-RW.

Alex: If you're checking back on this tread, could you possibly help me
out on my ERUNT question? It was posted at 2:52 PM on 3/11/04. This
should get you there if need be.

Thank you,

Actually ... that link probably won't do you any good at all ... I see
that it probably would only work for me. I'm still figuring out
newsgroup use :)

Sorry - I can't spot it on the msnews server. You had better post again
(and I'm going to be away a couple of days)
