Backup to CDs with XP Pro

I have tried to backup to CDs by backing up to a folder on
the hard drive and then copying the file to CDs. However,
when the file is larger than one CD (650 MB) the system
won't copy. I'm fully aware that I can do the math and
build the backup in steps but shouldn't the "copy to CD"
utility be able to handle and number the CDs required to
copy a larger file?

No it can't. Neither can any other burning progream when burn data CD's.
You can compress the folder using a program like WinRAR, as well as split it
into chunks.

or you can buy a real backup program that support backing up and spanning to
cd's, like Norton Ghost.

Unfortunately the Backup program that ships with XP is a very lite version
of Backup MyPC from http://www.stompinc.com/bump/bump-retail.phtml?stp The
XP version can not do a lot of things that the full featured version can.
The full version can save directly to CD and can span multiple disks. The
same is true for a number of other full featured backup utilities.
