I have Windows 95 on 1 computer, and windows XP Home
Edition on another. Windows 95 has a built-in data backup
application that lets me backup to an external disk. XP
has none - only online backup. Can I copy the backup app
from W95 to WXP without damaging WXP and will it function?

No the win 95 backup will not work on XP. If you have Windows XP Home the
backup application isn't installed by default. You need to install it from
the Windows XP CD. Browse the CD look for a folder called ValueAdd. Click on
this and then on the subfolder msft. Inside you should find an application
called NTBackup. Click on this to install the backup application.
If you have XP Professional then the backup application 'is' installed by
default. You can find it by clicking Start>All Porgrams>Accessories>System
Tools>Backup
Incidentally you will not be bale to use the Windows 95 backup files on
Windows XP. Win 95 uses the bak file extension whereas xp uses qic. Both are
incomaptible with each other.

It would be easier to take the hard drive from the Windows '95 computer,
set it to slave and put in into the XP computer and transfer your files
that way. You can simply cut/copy and paste. It worked for me.
