Backup Dell-Installed Programs during opening and scanning???

T

T. Viola

When I Open MS Spyware from the Toolbar, I get a message:

"Backup Dell-Installed Programs" - The feature you are typing to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available.
Insert the 'Backup Dell-Installed Programs' disk and click OK.

If I click [Cancel] I get the following:

"Backup Dell-Installed Programs" - Error 1706. No valid source could be found for product Backup Dell-Installed Programs. The Windows Installer cannot continue."

The only option is to click [Ok] from here.

Over and over I click [Cancel] and [Ok] to the above messages - at least 3 times.

At one point, it appears as if AntiSpyware was functioning ok but now this prevents me from opening the program and it won't complete a scan without needing to click the [Cancel] and [Ok] to get through these messages.

Help!

It is interesting that this is fairly common--in fact, common enough to have
made it into the FAQ.

If you have the Dell CD that is labelled similarly to this message, one way
to fix this is to complete the installation of the application involved. As
an alternative, you can download the Windows Installer cleanup application
from Microsoft:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301

Install it, run it, and find the item which corresponds to the message you
are seeing. Remove that item. Once you've done this, Microsoft Antispyware
should not display this message anymore.

Nothing to be ignorant about here--these are messages that you should never
see--and most people haven't ever seen.

They are not uncommon in this beta, but I suspect they will mostly go away
by release time.
