backup and restore

I want to back up my computer so I tried to use the Backup and Restore from
my xp home edition CD. I installed the utility and I started the backup
process but it showed 6 hours remaining.

Should it take this long???

Selecting "custom settings" might save some time as personal data can
be eliminated...However,actually the best "backup" utility is the file
transfer
wizard already installed to xp.Run the wizard from xp cd,select data to save,
save to new folder you created,once thru,move folder to cd.To collect data,
set wizard to run in "old computer"..With this backup,if anything fails on
pc,
one would install new copy of xp,but all the user settings/data/files,etc
would
be saved in FTW...
