Are you able to backup any "Windows Update" updates; so that in the event of
a re-format/re-installation of Windows XP from an original disc, you don't
have to re-download them?

Instead of Windows Update, use Windows Catalog. Start Windows Update,
go to preferences, choose the option to show Windows Catalog. Save
Preferences.

Now go to Windows Catalog, select your OS and the type of updates you
want to find. Select the ones you want to download and save it on your
disk. Very handy to reinstall the OS.
