Backing Up Files

New user to Windows XP Home Edition. Not a power user.
Knowing importance of backing up files, etc. looked for
backup routine on HD similar to that found on Windows
98. Not to be found. After a extremely frustrating
search thru all your so called resource info. ran across
note 1061357.

Said backup utility not factory installed on PC with rest
of Windows. Must install manually from XP CD. This I
did per instructions. No problem.

Proceeded to backup per instructions which were obscenely
meager. Used CD-RW for backup media. After several
false starts; i.e requirement to format CD to a
particular file extension, etc., etc., began the back up
process. Chose manual selection of files to backup but
wasn't quite sure what and why I was doing it. Finally,
was able to trfr. files to the CD. Manually selected
approx. 610 MB of files to backup. Got about 2/3rds
(abt. 20 mins. of writing)of the way home when msg. pops
up the media is full. No problem I said. Will insert
second CD and continue where prgm. stopped.

No way!! There is no way to continue backing up with
subequent CDs. Only option available was the Close
button which would have bailed out of the process
entirely. Could not insert second disc without re-
initiating process from scratch. No option available to
continue backup with a second disc.

That is my problem. How do I successfully and
efficiently backup my files with your utility
particularly when more than one CD is involved?

I have taken the time to compose a reasonable, hopefully
understandable request for what should be common how-to
information. I would hope your response would not be of
the automated variety by a PC or a standard "not our
problem" response.

Please consider. Experts, of which I am not one,
continually remind of the importance of doing backups.
Windows XP Home Edition does not ship with a home user
friendly backup utility installed on the PC; (in my case
a Dell 8300). Trying to research this out using
Dell/Microsoft Help & Support screens was an exercise in
total frustration. Finally, after inumerable
informational blind alleys, located a note 1061357 which
said utility is on the XP CD but is not installed. You
must install it manually. Furtermore when you do load it
there will be almost no information on how to use it
particularly the HOW, the WHAT and the WHY of your
utility.

Please help!! I would very much like to back up my
files, etc with a confident, fool proof, straight forward
process. Thank you!

Windows XP Backup does not have the capability to span multiple CDs
(record from one to another) during a backup operation. When using
Windows XP Backup, the total size of the backup file must not exceed
the formatted capacity of the CD (approximately 533MB). If you need to
backup an entire drive or a system volume exceeding 533 MB, you need
to use a third party backup and restore program designed to span the file
over multiple CDs.

You'll need a third-party CD Recording program, such as Nero,
in order to record and span the 2GB USMT file to multiple CDs.

Youre best bet for back-up is to use the file transfer wizard
Set computer as old, transfer data to a folder that you create, when its thru
transfer data from folder to a cd.It beats back-up and microsoft techs wil
recommend it over that, all user files, music, video, etc. get saved. If you find tha
youre folder tops the 650-700 mb size compress music files temporarly, photos also.
