Backing up files in MS Outlook

I exported my contact list in MS Outlook in .pst format as suggested in the
Help Section of Outlook. Seemed very easy and straight-forward. Once
completed however I could not open the backup file because a 'window pop'
said I needed to know the program that created it. MS failed to mention that
in their instructions. I have no idea. I chose from a list selection and
searched the web with no luck!

After countless tries to trouble shoot the file remains locked and
unaccessible. To add to the frustration, I tried to delete the file
completely however a 'window pop up' indicated (error cannot delete, program
is being used by another person or program, and to close all programs and try
again.) Once again No Luck!

All I want to do is create a simple backup copy of MS Outlook, Contacts,
Personal folders etc. in the event of a crash or loss. I have an external
hard drive I wish to import to.

Any suggestions is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

It sounds like your backup PST is getting mixed with the PST Outlook
is using, and that's why it's locked and it doesn't let you delete it.
Typically you don't open backup files directly, but you must restore
them using the application that created the backup file.

You may have better luck with Outlook questions on
microsoft.public.outlook. BCM is not involved in PST backups, just
backup and restore of its own data.

Luther,

I tried the url you listed however it would not page up. Is there a simple
way to copy contacts, folders in ms outlook as a backup? this is ridiculous!
