How can I backup Windows XP Pro system files USING STANDARD WINDOWS SOFTWARE
so that in case of hard drive failure, I can re-format/replace the hard
drive and restore Windows from the CD/DVD I have produced?

I know how to copy/backup data files and use them again.

You can't. Do yourself a favour and buy TrueImage.

Windows XP does not have a native "disk imaging" program.
To accomplish what you describe, you would need a third-
party program, such as Norton Ghost.

ntbackup.exe will do it for you. Unfortunately the restoration
process is rather tedious because you require an auxiilary
installation of Windows in order to run ntbackup.exe for
the restoration. Much easier to use a third-party imaging
product, e.g. from Acronis. They usually come with a tool
to make a boot CD.
