Boy I'm missing something!!!! All I want to do is take my bank eStatements
and copy them to my D drive. I keep getting messages saying the disk is full
or ... and nothing can be copied. What is the most straightforward way of
doing this?! Do I need to format DVD-R discs? If so where do I go to do
this?

I presume that your D drive is some kind of DVD burner. It might be a good
idea if you would tells details such as type, maker, and model.

If you format a DVD of any type, you wipe it clean. Thus, you lose whatever
the previous contents were. Surely, you don't intend to do that...

As for your question, the cause depends on the type of disk and the program
that you used to write the disk. If, for example, don't close the disk
correctly, you may not be able to add files.

In addition, life will go much better if you use a rewritable disk. And, if
you really want to be safe and secure, you would copy the data from the
rewritable disk to a DVD+-R disk at periodic intervals.

By the way, not all DVD burners can burn or read to both + and - formats.

I presume your D: drive is a burner - why did you not tell us.

Sorry, you cannot copy anything directly to CD or DVD unless you have either
Roxio (Drag to Disk) or Nero (inCD) installed on your computer.
Just to make absolutely sure I have tried on a Computer with XP Pro installed.
It also had Roxio installed. I had copy of the files selected on the CD.
I uninstalled Roxio and tried again and got a message that there was trouble
copying. You need to have a CD formatted in order to copy from Hard Disk or
anywhere on the Computer to CD.

If you just want to write a block of data to a CD then Nero and Roxio will do
that for you witout formatting.

To format a CD you need Nero or Roxio and you need to use the appropriate
program (InCD or Drag to Disk) within one of these multiuse Programs.

Not exactly true..all I have to do is right click the file and in the
menu that comes up I pick send to and then my burner. XP's native CD burning
works fairly well. XP does not natively burn DVD's so you need 3rd party
software for that. You only format CD/RW's not CDR's. A rewritable cd
formatted with INCD or the drag to disk will act like a floppy..you can add
to it or delete files like you would a floppy.
