Send to command

I can successfully use the 'Send to' command to send .avi files to my
CD-Rewriter using a CD-R without specific burning software. I have tried to
do the same using DVD-R discs in my DVD-Rewriter but I get 'D is not
accessible. Incorrect function'.
Is it actually possible to perform this using DVD-R's and if so what am I
doing wrong please?

Trying to write to DVDs using Windows XP native software - which does not
support writing to DVD+/- R/RW.
