Back-up / Boot Drive

Having experienced a hard drive crash not too long ago I want to back-up my
currebt drive but also have a boot option available. What is the best way of
achievinig this?
I was looking at an external drive but you cannot boot from a USB device so
this would mean a boot disc. Then again a second internal drive would be
cheaper and faster from a read / write standpoint.

Imaging software, eg Ghost, Trueimage etc

If your BIOS supports it you CAN boot from a USB device.
A backup on an internal drive is about useless, (but one step better than
none at all) a power surge can take out that drive too, keep the backup
external or removable.
