Back up and restore

Hi I am using windows vista premium on my laptop.
Is it possible to make an image backup with this operating system?
Also if a file backup completes successfully and is backed up on a network
drive will I be able to restore from a new install of window vista premium
on the same laptop that was backed up to the network drive? Is there a
better way using vista premium? I have Norton Ghost 12.0 on my desktop but
not on the laptop with vista premium. Don't what to have to buy a license
for laptop if there is another way to make sure in case of a failure of the
operating system that I could recover by an full backup or image ? I do some
beta testing and do not want to spend hours re-loading software! I do not
have a recovery partition on my laptop! If anyone has some information that
would give me a clue if what I am doing will work or not please type and let
me know? Thank you in advance!

SIW2,
Have you used this program before? Is there any information available
that would tell me about it before using? Thank you for suggestion. I am
downloading and hope to use if I can feel comfortable about it? Your help is
much appreciated!

Mike,
Thanks for the info! I was aware I could not use without another
license! I stated I didn't want to buy another license in my first post.

I can read.

I questioned your thinking that it couldn't be installed on another
machine. Is it specifically prohibited by the EULA? If you try to
install it on a second computer, will it run?

O.K. Mike,
Your 100% correct about that. Please except my apology if I offended
you! I wasn't meaning too! Anyway how do I get replies to show up within a
short time after I send? Seems yours come through in real time? Thank you
for all your help! Accidently sent to your e-mail. Please delete! Thanks
again!

Sorry to report: Downloaded and installed Macrium Reflect software.
Installed great, backed up partition for windows vista operating system on
my dual boot Dell inspiron 1721 Laptop, tried using lenix cd to go into
recovery environment and computer hung with frozen mouse at restore screen?
Lost patience after using for backup image, verifying and then creating disk
to flop as it did? Not sure it's worth the aggravation it has already
created? Just about to buy Ghost license again? I thank you for trying to
give me help!!

Before buying another Ghost license, it might be worth booting your
existing Ghost cd to make sure it works with your mouse.

Speaking of that... does Ghost 12 come on a bootable CD? Or does it
have the capability of making one that has its program on it?

Mike,
Ghost 12.0 comes with system one recovery CD and application one install
CD (2 CD's Total) which allows you to create a new recovery cd! Can I use
that to recover image created by macrium reflect? Thanks to all for replying
with info and concern!

Do you know what "RTFM" means??

SIW2,
Thanks I kind of thought it would not! Was hoping that Mike new of
someone that used it and was implying in that direction. I really would like
to make Macrium Reflect work with my Laptop. I was really tired the other
night and didn't have patience to try all suggested possible ways to create
a bootable recovery CD. Anyway I will keep it installed until I have tried
all possible ways to recover the image I created. Till I have any new news
Have a Great Day or Night! Will let this news group know if I succeed with
Macrium Reflect. Thanks again for all inputs!

I have had no trouble creating a Macrium bootable recovery CD on two
computers. I used the paid version on the desktop and the free version on
the laptop.

This makes me wonder about the problem you're having. Are you using
reasonable quality blank CD-Rs? Is there a bug in your computer? Are you
creating the CD from inside Macrium with nothing else running?

Etc...

Gene E. Bloch,
Will try some of your suggestions sometime this coming weekend! Will let
the newsgroup know when and if I do succeed! Thanks for your input! Last
night I tried exploring image with no success.

I should have mentioned that I have successfully used the Macrium CDs to
view the images that I made. Unfortunately, I have no idea where to look
for your problems - I just wanted you to know that they are not normal (in
my experience, anyway).

I haven't tried to restore a drive from the Macrium image. Too scary :)

I could do that experiment if I had a spare drive to substitute for the
good one. Or if the good one was suddenly bad :)

How do you know it's working if you never tested the restore function.

I speak from experience here. Trusted my backups were being done
successfully without testing and when I really needed it they were bad.

Always test!

He doesn't: he thinks this is a chat room so things like that don't
really concern him.

And if the test fails? Then, in the name of testing, I have converted a
good system into a hosed system...

At least if I don't try an image restore until my system gets hosed by
itself, and it fails then, I'm no worse off than I would have been without
the app.

Meanwhile, I can tell you that I can restore individual files from Macrium
images. That kind of test is not destructive. It also implies that even if
a full image restore doesn't work, at least I have a way to get my system
and data back, albeit a slow and painful one.

Keep the faith (bad joke, offered without apology!)
