My friend is a new computer user, a slow typist and gets clobbered with
time-outs on occasion. Is there a setting in Outlook Express or even a
third-party utility to prevent this?

Thanks for any help.

Look at dial-up settings. There is usually a setting to 'hang-up' after idle
for x seconds. Set it for never.

The dial-up ISP may have its own timeout setting; check any software that
the ISP provides that may allow you to modify their timeout settings.

Tools | Options | Connection | Change | Settings | Advanced Settings
Uncheck "Disconnect if idle ...".
