Avoid Close OUTLOOK before Windows Shutdown?

Is there a setting to stop the (annoying) feature that requires you to exit
Outlook before doing a Windows system shutdown?

I want to be able to shutdown or restart without having to close Outlook,
mainly because I always forget it and an open Outlook window stops the
shutdown. Not a huge deal, but quite annoying if you're doing maintenance
with lots of restarts

Starnge, when I shutdown/restart any open apps, inc OL, are closed/exited in
the process, without any intervention on my part

The problem occurs with Office XP and before - if Outlook is open when I try
to shutdown or restart the system I get a message "Please close all Office
applications before shutdown". But only for Outlook, the other Office apps
are closed for me, perhaps with a "Do you want to save the file" message if
I made a data change.

I just installed Office 2003 on one computer and it does not have this
problem. Strange?

Can I change settings on earlier Office products than 2003 to close Outlook
on shutdown?

Sorry for the multiple posts. I don't know what happened. ;-) I hope this
one goes only once.

Those messages were for a reason. Terminating the connection to its data
file is a pretty complex process in Outlook and could take long enough not
to finish completely before the OS shut down. Newer versions are better so
do not require that warning, but I've always made it a practice to shutdown
Outlook before shutting down the OS anyway. In theory, you shouldn't have
to, but it's not that much trouble and may be worth it in the long run. I
have never trusted the OS shutdown routine to protect my data.
