AVIRA A BIG SUPRISE!

After spending alot of time trying to keep my ESET free copy working (they
ae very BIG BROTHERISH) and
dealing with the HIGHLY INTRUSIVE nature of ESET on a windows system and
potential lack of privacy with their phone home features, not to mention
the difficulty of getting their shit program to uninstall clean, I gave
AVIRA a try.

SUPRISE, SUPRISE, not only did it install easily with a much cleaner and
user friendly interface, but much less system lag and very fast
definition update downloads AND it found several more trojans and other
malware on my box than ESET did EVEN with the heuristics turned off.
Looks like a WINNER to me. Bye bye ESET and good riddance.

I have implemented Micro$oft's Security Essentials, along with
MalwareByte's AntiMalware (Beta tester = registered) and WinPatrol (also
registered) for my defense.

These are the only three I rely on now for maintaining three Windows
7-based machines and one XP based machine.

I, too, have tried ESET in the past - and Norton, Symantec (both the older
SAV and the newer SEP), McAfee, Avira, AVG, Avast!, and a few others....

M$ has finally come out with a good free product.

I didn't keep records of winners over time, but at a guess Kaspersky and
F-Prot come to mind. I liked Norton 5.0, but later versions of what I
considered to be the better offerings out there became bloated with
fluff and free versions of adequate offerings actually looked like the
better option by contrast.

I'm using Avira's free version and am occasionally entertained by the
adware component trying to tell me how I need the e-mail scanning
component (and other fluff) of the pay version - or the apparently
erroneous "Ten Years Free" one that mentions ten *months* free defs in
the smaller print. Yes, I am aware of the way to rid myself of the ads -
and the damned thing eats too many cycles to serve up the ad, so I might
eventually do it. I am willing to let the adware do its thing for the
time being, after all it is a free version and really good software.

up until the defs were no longer available.
F-Prot v3.16f was the last good thing Frisk did.

I'd gladly swap that one 'clip to close' ad for other annoyances in my life.
I'll be getting a laptop soon with windows 7. No doubt this will come
with the usual trial stuff which I'll remove. Question is should I stick
with Avira or try the new MS stuff, and will that come as part of
windows 7. Also, to what extent are this new systems better at avoiding
attacks than winxp. I've never had a virus in years of computing.

As far as I know there exists NO "free" copy of ESET.

I use NOD32 (of Eset) and I have no problems.
I have no idea what "Big Brother" problems you could have.

That's because you don't know enuf.

I also have Avira Antivir installed as a "second opinion" on demand
antivirus scanner.
When I do a full scan with Avira twice per week, no malware is

found.

The Trojans Avira found were in archived files I never execute.
Missed by ESET. So I don't need your safehex advice, thanks.
Never had a Trojan or a virus for that matter.

But Avira Antivir is a good choice, congratulations.
And maybe you better watch "safe-hex"?

If you still have those 'trojan' files, send them to virustotal.com and see
if they are really trojans.
Avira found several on my PC, but they were all false positives.
I use and still like Avira, but be aware that it does indicate more false
positives than my old AVG did.

Interesting that in full scan mode many FPs were detected, whereas via the
context menu none were found, too flaky for me, already dumped it.
Revo did a complete removal, nice.

I believe I had it turned on at the time, but not sure. It found most of the
FPs on my old Win98SE OS and programs on my dual-boot system.
