Problem sending & receiving after installing Avira AntiVirus

C

Catrina

We were running Trend Micro as our antivirus, but when it expired I was told
that Avira was a good one. I downloaded the free version and installed it on
my computer. The first scan it did find a trojan virus, but said it was very
minor and was just something that got info on our household. I quarantined
the file. I then went in and uninstalled Trend Micro since I wouldn't need
it anymore.

Whe I restarted my computer my Windows Mail would no longer work. I have
multiple email accounts set up with it. It says connecting, receiving mail
(45 messages) and then I get this error message:
An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'mail.gaeagraphics.com', Server:
'mail.gaeagraphics.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error
Number: 0x80004005
Then it goes on to do the same for my other mail account.
An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'pop3.cecomet.net', Server:
'pop3.fairpoint.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error
Number: 0x80004005

I contacted my isp first to find out if there was a problem and after
walking me through some things said that it was an issue with windows mail.

So I uninstalled Avira. No change to windows mail. I did a system restore
back to a week ago. No change to windows mail.

It continues to give me the error message everytime I hit send & receive.
Except .. tonight it let 1 message through, none of the rest, though.

I thought the problem was only receiving, but when I tried to send an email
tonight I realized it was in sending too. When I finished composing my
message I hit SEND on it and a pop up came up: The message could not be sent.
An error occured.
It won't even let it go to the outbox.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

After uninstalling the antivirus software it is sometimes necessary to
remove your mail account(s) and at it back again, as the AV software screws
up the account settings. Try removing a mail account, closing and reopening
WinMail, and then adding it back again and see if that fixes things.

You might try AVAST as an AV client instead. It appears to be less invasive
and is free. Make sure email scanning is disabled.

Thank you for your quick response. :)

I just now went through and removed all email accounts from winmail. I
closed the program, repoened it and created a new account with my
information. It didn't work, though. This is the error message I received
when trying to send & receive.
An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'pop3.fairpoint.net', Server:
'pop3.fairpoint.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error
Number: 0x80004005

Thank you,
Catrina

Windows Mail often reports unknown error when the error is due to
interference from an antivirus program.

Well I've uninstalled all virus programs, so I'm not sure what it could be at
this point. I've reinstalled the Vista service pack. I've taken the
accounts out of winmail and added them back in. Nothing is working. I'm
about ready to throw the computer out the window.
Please... anyone know how to fix this? Does it have to do with the windows
firewall?
Thank you again, for any help.

It is possible that the antivirus you uninstalled left remnants that are
still interfering with Windows Mail.
I recommend you try Windows Live Mail because i is less sensitive
to interference from antivirus programs.

Thanks, but I really am not looking for something where everything is stored
online. I want all of my mail on my computer because of my business.
So .... my computer is now ruined? This seriously sucks that Windows Mail
cannot work now because of this.
Ugh. :(

Hi Catrina,
I don't have an email client installed in front of me right now, so
I'm operating from memory. Even when you restore a drive/hard disk to
a previous state, the restore mechanism (native to the OS or third-
party) often tries to act smart, and will not restore certain document
folders, in an effort to keep your personal info up to date. I'm
guessing this is what happened to you. Manually uninstall your email
client and remove any leftover registry entries. Make sure you've
manually deleted leftover registry entries from Avira, too. Finally,
reinstall your email client (I'm guessing the installer isn't
corrupted by a virus) and set up your folders, etc, again. Hope this
helps.

PS- Since you use your computer to store sensitive information, I
suggest you opt for NOD32 or Kaspersky (read the reviews on my blog if
you wish; I've practically used every major antivirus brand and
written about my experience). Don't go for free antivirus programs,
since, despite their massive improvements and fan followings, they
still have some way to go.

A recent version of the NOD32 antivirus program causes problems in
Windows Mail, even though many earlier versions did not, so you might
want to think about whether you should continue to recommend it.

What makes you think you have to store anything online with Windows
Live Mail? You can use it just like Windows Mail, with everything stored
on your local computer.
You might as well move to WLM sooner than later because Microsoft is
no longer developing WM. It is a dead duck. For the past 17 months, all
email development work has gone into WLM rather than WM.

Where are you getting this bad advice from?
Windows Mail cannot be uninstalled. You would have to totally wipe
all of Vista.

Also, it doesn't matter if an antivirus program is 'best' at stopping
viruses. If it is not compatible with various parts of Vista, it is worthless.

See if you can telnet to the mail server. See
http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/pop3telnet.htm If that works okay
and WinMail still doesn't, then try the compact and repair database
functions of my Windows Mail utility (www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/) and then add
your accounts and see if that has any impact on the problem.

If you can telnet and WinMail still doesn't work, then try resetting the
message store: Move everything out of the store folder (location is found
via Tools | Options | Maintenance | Advanced | Store Folder) so that it has
no subdirectories at all and is completely empty. Then start WinMail and
set up an account and see if that works. If you get it working, then you
can use File | Import | Messages to get the message from the moved store.

I just worked on my dad's computer last night...he was having the same
problem with his windows mail. He was running Trend Micro and as soon as I
turned off the "email scan" (in Trend) it started working. I know you said
earlier that you uninstalled all anti-virus programs. I would make sure that
trend is completely uninistalled again.
