For some reason i can't use .avi Files with windows movie maker

is there an update in which i can use these. I use Windows Movie Maker 2.1
but you

see when i go to use it within Windows Media Player it runs but the video
doesn't

show at all but the sound works. But the videos work within another program
i have

called VLC

".avi" is only the extension of the file... It is confusing but there are
many different .AVI formats. It sounds like you are missing the DIVX/XVID
codecs that's why Media Player only has sound but no picture. You can
install a codec pack called "FFD SHOW" that will give you the proper codecs
for WMP. The reason VLC plays it is because it has built in codecs whereas
WMP needs you to install them.

As for WMM you won't be able to import DIVX and XVID avi's into it (i think,
im pretty sure it's not supported) you need to convert your Divx file to an
MPG or MPEG first.

trying googling "Convert avi to mpg" you should be able to find a program
for it.

I think the original poster needs to convert his original divx/xvid to .wmv
or .avi w/dv-avi instead of converting to mpeg; WMM does not handle mpeg
files properly either. I convert my .mpg files to .wmv ahead of time.
