Avi files playing in only part of the mediaplayer window

Some avi files play only in a part (a third or fourth -
depending of the screen resolution) of the entire media
player window. Other avi files play fine in the entire
screen. Any ideas how to fix this?

If the video was encoded from a fullscreen source it will play fullscreen if
the video was encoded in widescreen format you will have black bars at the
top and bottem of the video.

The black bars at the top and bottom of the screen are
not the problem. The image is even smaller than that.
It's like I can't zoom to 100% or 200%.
