avi and mpg don't work

All of a sudden my Vista PC will not show the video portion of avi or mpeg
files. Audio - yes but no video.

All was fine until two or three days ago.

Have been using VLC Video player to watch files and it still works on my
other home PC which is Win XP - so the files are not faulty.

Windows Media Player acts exactly the same whereas it used to work.

Also have identical Vista PC at work and it still works with mpegs.

Any ideas ?

What changed in those two to three days? Do WMV files still work?
What video card do you have? Is there a driver update available?
