What audio codec do your clips use?
Are you using Vista or Vista SP1? SP1 should work better with digital
camera AVIs (some digital camera AVIs use bad-ish data formats which can
lead to no audio being played - SP1 has a work-around allowing those strange
AVIs to work).

Can anyone shed any light on this problem? Possibly a system restore
back to last year maybe?

Pur lease ;)
Please post what the filename(s) are? Give us an
example file name. The trouble with some AVIs is that the
person that encoded (recorded) them may have used an add-on
codec (sometimes divx is used for video and a52/ac3 for audio)

You likely couldn't actually deduce the codecs used from a picture or from
the filename - you could use a tool such as GSpot Codec Appliance to show
that data, though. =\

Or if you put up a sample AVI showing this issue, that would be easy enough
to check the headers for and determine the codecs in question.

(http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c229/madsam106/avifile3.jpg), the
files are video clip (avi). None of my videos on my computer now play
with sound!!
