AVG questions

Yesterday I downloaded and installed AVG. I have Netscape web mail and a
pop account through my isp. I only set it up for Netscape so far. I
selected the option "personal e-mail scanner" for plugin. Is this
correct and will this work when I add my pop account? In the AVG control
center is says it is functional but when I send or receive e-mail I
don't see the message where AVG says it has been scanned. I see this
when I get e-mail from other folks. I have set in the properties for it
to do so. I'm not sure it is working. How can I tell for sure.

Don't know, BUT suggest you use Yahoo for email (accounts are free) they have excellent
protection.

Send yourself an email, it should have the outgoing message visible when
you open it.

If it's working and logging is turned on, then there will be a record
of the e-mail in the log.

I think that one way to test whether AVG is doing its job is to enable
the "certification message," and then send yourself a few posts (in
whatever way that you go about doing this). Or send some posts back and
forth with friends. Then see if you find the tacked-on message. If you
do, I think it's reasonable to assume that the post has been scanned.
Then, I recommend turning it off.

Personally, I find these tack-ons to be a PITA to read -- they're really
advertising, and give a sense of false reassurance. I like AVG and use
it myself. However, there are more aggressive antivirus programs out
there, and one of them may indeed find a virus inside a message that AVG
has "certified."

I don't like Yahoo. For one thing, I find Yahoo's ingenious business
practices regarding enforced advertising sneaky and sleazy. A post sent
from Yahoo, _including from _paid accounts,_ carries an ad for Yahoo at
the end. Now, some readers of this will say, "Richard; get a life!" in
reply to this. YMMV; I try to minimize my advertising exposure -- the
damn stuff worms its way into my brain. Some of Yahoo's tags advertise
that if you use their service, they'll block spam, yet they put spam
onto every email.

Also, when you sign up for a Yahoo account now, you agree to let Yahoo
spam you. It's part of the contract. In other words, as John Corliss
would say in this newsgroup, Yahoo is off-topic here: it isn't freeware:
it's adware and spamware. And I'll add, sleazeware.
