With apologies if this is slightly OT, but having downloaded the free
version of AVG and enabling the full protections, I notice that I don't
have any messages telling me that my incoming and outgoing e-mails are
being scanned and certified.

Is this just the way the program works?

I use Thunderbird for e-mail and news in case this make a difference.

I know it has an OE plugin, and it does have scanning options seperate
from that, maybe it scans all traffic on th POP and SMTP ports or
something, I have never had those messages coming up though, and I use
Thunderbird and AVG.

As far as I know, only a few email clients (eg OE) have the
incoming/outcoming mail attachments scanned by AVG.

Havent tried this but theres a personal email scanner that can be added
to avg 6 (it doesnt say free or pro so im assuming its for both). It seems
to be the same scanner used in avg7 (which is way better than the 6 one
).Seems to be free at first glance.

Yes I think you're right. AVG seems to scan effectively but
doesn't show the messages when using TBird.
