AVG problem with finding/removing worm

George W.

After checking new mail with Pegasus I got an alert from AVG saying a
worm had been found and that I should run the program. I tried
deleting the new mail in Pegasus and could delete all but one, the
infected one. No attachment, by the way. Ran AVG and no virus was
found. Tried deleting from Windows Explorer but got the same alert
from AVG each time I highlighted the file. I right clicked on Pegasus
in Explorer and ran an AVG scan from there and it found the bad file.
Unfortunately I was still left with running AVG and of course it
didn't find the bad file. GRRRRR...

Eventually I was able to delete the file from Explorer even though the
alert kept popping up. I assume I'm now clean but this quirky behavior
is making me question AVG overall. I've been using it for over a year
with no problems and this is the first virus/worm I've encountered. I
never opened the email, by the way. I routinely just delete all the
crap. Any suggestions on a step I might be missing? Any opinions on
how Avast compares to AVG? Thanks.

You can not delete a file while it in use by another program(AVG), you would
have to find the file and then shut AVG down to delete the file. This would
be the same process for all good antivirus software.

You're welcome.

Thanks. I shut off the warning but not AVG. Still, it seems odd AVG
popped up an alert yet couldn't find the worm through a full scan.
Stranger still that I couldn't delete it without shutting down AVG. I
would have thought I could get rid of it WITH AVG.

I think AVG calls it a "custom scan" in the settings, tick the box to "scan
all files".
