avg free 7.5?

Did this new avg free 7.5 suddenly start to make my pc slower?
when i first started using avg i was impressed that it didnt use resources
like that crappy nortons...but with this new version i;ve
noticed very slow start ups due to avg and a noticeably slower
computer...what up anyone else feel this?

You're not insane. Avg 7.5 includes a scan for viruses DAILY option by
default. If your computing practices are low risk, you can disable
it.

Yes, avg7.5 causes a performance hit, just like all antivirus programs
do, to some degree.

Mine runs the same as the earlier versions.

I followed the suggestion to update as a "repair installation" rather
than a new install. Perhaps that is the difference.

default. If your computing practices are low risk, you can disable

7.1 did not scan daily, by default. It DID update daily.

My 7.5 does NOT scan daily by default. Perhaps this is because, as
I stated, I upgraded using the recommended "repair installation"
option.

Possibly. When you do a new install, the checkbox that says "schedule
daily scan (recommended)" (more or less) is checked, unless you
uncheck it.

7.1 did not scan daily, by default. It DID update daily.

Are you certain you didn't disable that? I know it did on a
system here until I'd disabled it. Come to think of it, on
that system I had installed 7.5 over 7.1 (after having
observed that it had defaulted to a daily scan) and the 7.5
installation then retained the 7.1 setting for that.

Pretty sure. At least on the free version. 7.1 has a background daemon
running more or less all the time, that does flag viruses, but it's
not the whole hard drive scan, that 7.5 does at startup.

You've said that 3 times already. I believe you that the repair
install option doesn't ask. But the reason I prefer the fresh install
is that the repair install sometimes (but not usually, but often
enough to be annoying) flakes out, and you have to start a fresh
install anyway.

his 7.1 did not. Your [misguided] preference for the "fresh" install
is quite irrelevant. The "repair installation" install avoids the
problem the OP had.

I still think 7.1 defaults to a daily scan and a repair
install of 7.5 just retains whichever previous setting was
set, whether the default of daily scan or disabled if the
user/installer/whoever had disabled that.

I could be mistaken though, it is possible that I'm
remembering it from a system that had prior to v7.1
installed, then later upgraded to 7.1, and the upgrade
retained the default from the prior version which was
enabled, while 7.1 might not have enabled it.

What I do recall for certain was seeing it enabled on a
system running 7.1, when there had been no choice actively
made to enable it, it had been defaulted to enabled at some
point in the history of the system.

The important fact is that the "repair installation" update to 7.5
*does* preserve whatever settings were present in 7.1. Whether or not
they were default settings is irrelevant to the end result.
