avg 7.5 install query

M

MZB

I have a Dell Inspiron 2200 with XP Home.

I currently use AVG Free (7.1) and Zone Alarm Free (and Ad-Aware).

AVG has a new major upgrade to 7.5 (AVG Free).

Has anyone had any problems installing it?? Any problem with Zone Alarm or
did everything install seemlessly??

Mel (hoping to avoid any aggravation!)

Other than having to check always allow on a pop-up from ZA that the
AVG Free updater had changed, no problems on my wife's notebook with
XP home. On my 98SE machine, 7.5 didn't properly register the bootup
scanner (not available on XP installs), a common problem, so I had to
uninstall and reinstall. Just be sure to follow Grisoft's install
instructions. YMMV ;-).

Selected "repair install" on both a Win98SE and WinME PC with no problems.

Aha..installed AVG Free on Win98SE and saw the bootup scanner each
bootup, but drove me nuts cuz looking for missed marks checks cuz I
didn't see it on the WinXP...now you tell me it's not available on WinXP.
(G)
I believe you, but care to tell me where that is documented?
Inquiring minds want to know.(G)

And FWIW in my limited experience installing AVG on several computers,
the bootup scanner is only available on 98 systems.

Thanks Luke, I guess I could have checked the AVG free forum but find
myself slightly reluctant to ask anything there as the moderators seem to
spend much of their time posting canned responses lecturing people about
posting in the wrong area. Guess I really can't complain too much after
all it is a free program and the forum is staffed by volunteers.(G)
Thanks again, much appreciated.

Heh, or telling folks they're not posting precisely exactly the
correct information in precisely exactly the correct format :).
Anywho, you're welcome. Oh, did you notice one can now delete old
update files from within AVG Control Center?

Exactly.(G)
I would have thought that this kind of "required" info would have a place
in the User's Profile so it would always be posted as taglines, available
when a question or reply was posted no ned to type it in each time...guess
you could have a canned response of your own ready for inclusion.(G)
Anyway back to your comment about deleting old update files from within AVg
Control Center.
No, I wasn't aware and do not see any, I update automatically, I haven't
downloaded any dats or other updates manually so far, or are you referring
to some AVG files that I am not aware of?
I do see a file AVG7Qt.dat dated two days ago located on C:, not sure what
this is, possibly from the new install of AVG 7.5 I did two days ago as it
hasn't grown any in the last two days?

BTW thanks for pointing out your observations from your experiences with
installing AVG a number of times, it is most appreciated.

Look in:
WinXP: C:\Documents and Settings
Win98x: C:\Windows
then:
\All Users\Application Data\Grisoft\AVG7Data\upd7bin

You should see a bunch of ".bin" files. They're old update files AVG
no longer needs which are just taking up HD space and which one had to
delete manually. They can now be deleted from within AVG:

Control Center - Update Manager - Settings - Advanced tab - Delete
update temporary files
BTW thanks for pointing out your observations from your experiences with
installing AVG a number of times, it is most appreciated.

You're welcome, though I'm far from an AVG expert :).

Yep I see the bin files and I finally found the update manager option to
delete them. (G)
I just started using AVG (free) trying an installing on a Win98SE box I was
giving away and then on my WinXP mainly becuase I'm fed up with McAfee
after being loyal to them since Ver 3, they just don't seem to be able to
get it right the first time anymore. The problem they had with Ver 11 when
it first came out of having to unistall AdAWare and SpyBot before
VirsusScan ver 11 could be installed along with the problems they created
with Ver 10 by telling you that you had to have MS I.E. as your default
browser to have automatic updates was the final straw for me, yeah they got
Ver 11 finally sorted out but as I said it was too just late.
Thanks again for the heads up on the AVG 7.5 bootup scanner and the option
to delete old update files. Much appreciated.
