AVG A/V plus Firwall ??

someone

I have AVG A/V + Firewall and have had no problems with it. I have XP but
don't use that firewall. I've heard you can't use two firewalls.

Why pay for a firewall? Either get SP2 that automatically comes with a
Windows Firewall or dl the Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall for free!

I want the "program control" that can be set to "alert" each time a program
tries to get out onto the web, like that in Zonalarm, (which I very nearly
bought), and like that in AVG which I've just noticed is half the price !

Why pay?
Well - what you get depends on what you feel you need in a firewall.

While the Windows XP SP2 'firewall' may do enough for some - it may not give
the level of control/logging/notification some users want/desire. So may
not the freeware versions of other products. There's must be a market for a
higher level of a product for pay *if* there are products out there making
money and staying in business by offering such things. Not everyone's needs
or perceived needs are equal.

Doesn't the free version of Zonealarm do that?

You can, but you shouldn't, use two software firewalls. You achieve no extra
protection, you incur the extra overhead of running two firewalls, and you
run the risk (probably small, but not zero) of conflicts between them.

See http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/protect/firewall.mspx which
includes the following:

"Q. Should I use both the built-in firewall and a software firewall from a
different company on my Windows XP computer?

"A. No. Running multiple software firewalls is unnecessary for typical home
computers, home networking, and small-business networking scenarios. Using
two firewalls on the same connection could cause issues with connectivity to
the Internet or other unexpected behavior. One firewall, whether it is the
Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall or a different software firewall,
can provide substantial protection for your computer."

Also note that if you update your third-party firewall to a new version, the
update routine will probably turn it off first. If the Windows firewall
isn't running, you will temporarily be left with no running firewall, which
is very dangerous. So turn on the Windows firewall temporarily before doing
maintenance on your third-party firewall.

It does, though "program control" doesn't seem to be as comprehensive in the
free version compared to that in the fully working 15 day version. I've
dropped back to ZA free, after chickening out of buying it. ZA internet
security suite - it was very impressive, and Privay / cookie control was
very good as well. The anti-spyware module in ZA internet security suite
was described by some reviewers, (in as many words), variable in performance
over the past few months, and improving.

Any views on Grisoft's firewall:-

It's half the price of Zonealarm ! ...or 2 years support for the same
money !

Panda is TOOOO slow ! :)

I understand you want to test many products and see if they work correctly
but you should understand that there are products that have proved their
ability and productivity during the years.Zone Alarm and Sygate are quite
good.Windows Firewall is my favourite .All these = free so as you are posting
in home users groups I think you don't need anything more than Windows
Firewall or the free version of Zone Alarm which both will protect your
computer .

< BTW , Agree with Elendil ;) >

My two cents:

I use AVG for my A/V and Zonealarm Free for my Firewall...haven't had any
problems with this setup (can't say the same when I ran NIS) and haven't
spent a dime.
