Hmmm....could be just to ensure that the beta version doesn't hang

Absolutely. (I've seen the "expiring beta" in some cases where it was
simply that, though, so at the moment it's definitely a "wait and see"
rather than "jump to conclusions" thing.)

To be honest, I probably won't try it anyway: although AVG has been
very good, I don't personally feel there's a yawning gap in the
market which demands to be filled with another firewall product,
freeware or not.

OTOH, I use AVG Free and Sygate Personal Firewall. I would certainly
be interested in a product that would allow me to eliminate one
start-up program, provided that the AVG firewall were as good as
Sygate.
