AVG 7.0 (yes, 7.0) Free Beta

Has anyone tried the beta release of AVG 7.0 Free? Apparently, the
free version will go to 7.0 some time around November. Looks to be a
streamlined version of 7.0 Pro, with some of the scheduling and test
features disabled. Footprint is slightly larger than 6.0, but the
speed is still good. The updater and automated scan functions seem to
be improved. Any comments?

Yes. Thanks very much for pointing this out! 80)>

I tried it but it is extremely slower than avg 6.
AMD 64 bit 3400+ 2GB DDR400
200GB SATA

AVG 6 --> takes ~ 19 mins
AVG 7 --> takes ~ 49 mins

same system, same everything.
hmmm.... I don't see any major improvement :)

Was it slower because it was using more resources, or was it doing a more
indepth scan than v6 used to do?

Both versions were set to scan only the standard file extensions with
heuristics. no floppies, no cdroms were scanned.

Both scanned within minutes of each other:

(1) avg 6 was already installed; updated as of early this morning. scan took
~19 mins.

(2) dl'd avg7 & installed. rebooted. scanned same drive with same amount of
files on plus a few more (avg 7 has more files than avg 6). scan took ~49 mins.

AVG 7 has a lot more overhead than 6. I own the AVG Network Pro version but
find the interface in 6 much faster & better. They both are excellent programs
& you won't go wrong with either freeware version :)

Ozzy,
I've just run similar back-to-back tests:
AVG6 (free) took 18mins to scan 38,754 objects i.e. 2,153 obj/sec
AVG7 (free/beta) took 34mins to scan 60,977 objects i.e. 1,793
obj/sec.

So the scan rate has diminished somewhat (but there may debug code
in the Beta version that is responsible). But more significant is
that the number of objects scanned is much greater. [I've checked
that test conditions are as identical as possible]

I am sure that it is no big deal. Users should be assured that either way;
their pc's are being fully protected. I just wanted to show that it does take a
wee bit longer in avg 7 for the scans :)

Has anyone tried the beta release of AVG 7.0 Free?

I installed it yesterday. It may be that my Windows 98 is a problem, but I
encountered several difficulties:
Windows froze during the mandatory reboot. I had to reset manually.
Creation of the rescue disk failed.
While AVG was running, I couldn't open the AOL software.
Like other posters, my scan took about 45 minutes.

Since it's a beta-version, it might be a good idea to report this kind of
behaviour to Grisoft so they can try improve it.

I've had a chance to fool around with 7.0 Free just a bit, and this is what
I've found, so far:

My aging Thinkpad R30 laptop is a 1GHz PIII, with 384M RAM and a 30G hard
disk that is about 60% full, and the OS is Win XP Pro. I ran the "personal
email scanner" with both programs. (With version 6.0, it's a separate
plug-in.) With their respective Resident Shields running, along with the
same miscellaneous system utilitles, the AVG Free versions reported the
following after scanning the PC's hard disk:

AVG 6.0 Free __

Test duration 00:25:43.8
15033 objects tested
184M RAM free

13 files were reported as "Cannot open; not checked" that included the
HYBERFIL.sys file and things like NTUSER.DAT, etc.

AVG 7.0 Free beta __

Test duration 22:58.6
21021 objects tested
176M RAM free

There were no messages regarding unopened files, but I have no idea whether
that means they were indeed scanned or not.

I repeated the test, with the same results. Not entirely scientific or
fool-proof, I know, but I think it might be meaningful.

So...

Best as I can tell, and on MY particular PC, the new beta does consume a bit
more memory, but within tolerable limits. Boot-up times don't seem to be
greatly affected. San times are QUICKER with 7.0 beta, even though the same
parameters were set and a greater number of objects were scanned. Informal
tests identified the same known infections on some test disks, and the
clean/heal rate was the same for both programs, when using the latest
available updates.

AVG 7.0 Free connects to Grisoft's online Virus Encyclopedia, which is nice,
but the shell extension opens a test results window, whether or not any
infections were found. Kind of a pain, having to close the window, when
it's not even necessary.

The updater is improved in 7.0. For users like me, who don't have their PCs
continually powered up and connected to an ISP, the updater will
automatically download the new virus definitions upon the next available
internet connection.

All in all, 7.0 Free looks pretty good so far. That's just my $.02 worth.

I'm test driving the AVG 7.0 beta on two computers at the moment. So far it's been working fine. It took a while to figure out how to configure the pop email scanner. That seems to be working properly now, but I wonder about the scanner icon. It displays when mail is being received, but not when sending mail. Has anyone else noticed this behavior? Should the scanner icon display when sending as well?

Sound like a question for (e-mail address removed)

So true.

I still have NAV 2003 with an active subsription, but I use AVG now instead.
I tried Avast! too. It was okay, but I guess I'm too old-fashioned. I
never learned to like its funky appearance and interface.

Best I can tell, AVG 7.0 is scanning outgoing mail, but I base that only on
the "certification" added to the bottom of a message, if selected, and the
fact that it did block a message I sent with the EICAR_test virus
intentionally attached.

Daze makes a good point. Ask (e-mail address removed) your question. I
sent them a couple of unrelated questions and comments about the UI and
options, and got a response from them in about a day's time.
