AutoRun Wizard Not Popping Up for CDs or Media Cards

Edw. Peach

My AUTOPLAY feature is not working as of today. I have two CD-R bays
(one for reading, the other for writing. I use one USB port for a Zip
Drive and a multi-media card reader. I exchange this as necessary but
have never had a problem with it.

I checked the hardware profile and everything seems to be working
properly, or at least that's what my computer says.

I noticed a problem today when I plugged in a camera memory card and
the autorun wizard did not pop up. I tried accessing the
scanner/camera wizard through my system tools and that didn't work.
My CD drives work fine, but I have to access them myself by opening
Windows Media Player or the software program I use to burn CDs.

I tried reinstalling the media reader software again and plugging the
reader back in. Nothing. Through My Computer, I see that the card
reader is listed, as is my external HD. My card reader was working
fine a few days ago.

My CD burner was working fine. I burned a few CDs.

I have had a few odd occurances, so here is a list of the past two
weeks or so.

Two weeks (30 Dec) ago my AV software picked up some malware that had
been installed on my computer, JAVABYTEVER.A. These are the files my
AV software detected:

JAVA_BYTEVER.A = BlackBox.class
JAVA_BYTEVER.A = Bug.class
JAVA_BYTEVER.A = Dummy.class

th.jar-fb0a0d9-42a11ab0.zip

They were removed and I scanned again and everything seemed fine. I
have been using my computer since then and everything has performed
normally.

In the last few days I've downloaded and installed the recent MS
updates.

I noticed the problem this afternoon when I tried to download some
photos through the multi-card media reader (eFilm, Delkin Devices.) I
plugged in the card and nothing happened. Usually, the autorun wizard
pops up and asks me what I want to do.

I opened the Control Panel, I got an error message that IE encountered
a problem. (I wasn't opening IE.) The next time I tried the Control
Panel, everything worked fine. Then I tried IE and the page opened to
a different browser than I normally use.

This was the URL for that was listed as my homepage on the IE
Tools>Internet Options:
http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd=ie&pver=6&ar=msnhome.

MSN is not my homepage.

I just ran a virus can an no viruses were detected. I ran an Ad-Aware
scan and nothing was found. I ran a system disk error check and no
problems were found.

Turned on External HD and got a message saying that my computer found
new hardware (I had been using the drive earlier this morning.)

Any guesses what could be causing this, or better yet, suggestions on
how I can fix it?

I use Windows XP Pro.

I forgot to mention I tried that, too. No, it didn't help. However,
I found a solution. In downloaded/installed TweakUI and it had a
setting for the AUTORUN feature. Mine were turned off. I certainly
don't know how THAT happened. But then I don't know how anybody was
able to hijack my homepage, either.

Thanks anyway.

Glad to hear TweakUI fix your problem.

Thanks.

I hope that's the end of it. I'm not a comp geek though I'm not at
all uncomfortable on the computer. That my browser was hijacked that
one time (took me to MSN.com) and I had that confusing error message
about a problem opening IE (when in fact I was trying to access my
Control Panel) has me on guard. I'm not sure what to look for, but if
anything out of the ordinary happens, I'm ready: I have a can of Raid
bug spray.

(It probably won't do any good.)
