Automatic updates

I have AU set to download and notify, as I prefer to vet updates before
installing them. Lately the 'updates ready' icon never appears, but on
shutdown I get the notification and the 'click here to shutdown
without......' so I can't check what MS have sent me. Does anyone know if
those sneaky (insert preferred expletive) at MS have done this on purpose to
stop people like me vetting updates?
