Internet Problem

I have a pc that will not connect to the internet via dsl. Dial-up
connection works OK. If I connect via dsl by either nic or usb nic I get a
dhcp address and ipconfig shows the correct settings, but cannot load any
web page or ping an external ip address.

I have manually removed pcguard, malware and any obvious firewall. If I
connect to another pc by a crossover cable and set static ip's I can see the
other pc, but it can't see me. Something seems to be blocking outgoing
tcp/ip on everything expect the modem.

Any ideas. Please?

If you are using XP, your dial-up and DSL connections may show up as 2
different connections under my network places. I suggest you plug in
your DSL to the nic, view my network places and change the IP setting
to obtain it auto.

This may help...

Jon,

Yes, it's XP home.
I have tried the dsl in both the onboard nic and a usb nic. I have tried
both auto ip and static ip. In all cases it shows as connected, and I seem
to get incoming traffic, but outgoing appears to be blocked.

The reason I tried dial-up was to make sure that the tcp stack and/or
Internet Explorer had not been corrupted. I have even tried un/reinstalling
all networking, but with the same result.

I have run out of ideas.

Some of the malware you had probably damaged system files. First, make
sure your computer is 100% clean.

Then next try the System File Checker.
Start>Run>sfc /scannow [enter]
Have your XP CD handy.

If SFC doesn't help, do a Repair Install:
