Automatic Updates Not Really Disabled?

P

Pat

In Windows XP, I've got automatic updates disabled (System Properties | Automatic
Updates, selected "Turn Off Automatic Updates")

However, Sysinternal's Process Explorer shows that shortly after boot, the windows
automatic updates program WUAUCLT.EXE runs.

Is there something I'm missing, or something else I should be selecting to disable
automatic updates???

Thank You,

Pat

How can I tell if Windows Defender is installed? (BTW this is WinXP Pro)
I do have the Windows XP firewall enabled.

Is "Turn Off Automatic Updates" still checked? If not and if you check it
again, does it stay checked after rebooting?

Is this your own personal machine used in a home or small office
environment?

Pat,

START | RUN type sevices.msc & press ENTER

Stop & disable the Automatic Updates service

To stop:

Double-click it & click the stop button

Disable:

Choose Disable from the list, click apply then ok

Close services

Automatic Updates also uses the BITS service too

Spoof your e-mail Pat

Duh. Yes.

Good, just checking: Your earlier posts on this weren't clear enough to me.

If you'd found that the setting didn't "stick" upon rebooting, that would
have told us something.

If the machine was one at work that belonged to your employer, something
else other than Automatic Updates may have been causing WUAUCLT.EXE to
start.

I see from another reply of yours that you managed to stop the Service, but
that doesn't answer why it was running in the first place if AU had been
disabled.

Good luck with that.

Good to know, I'll remember that!
