disabling automatic updates

Hello,

Awhile ago, I tried to disable the message box that keeps popping up after
Windows installs an update that prompts you to restart your computer and if
you do not restart then it restarts automatically after 5 minutes. I managed
to get rid of the automatic restart after 5 minutes by using the Registry
Editor to add the registry setting "NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers" in the
folder "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\
WindowsUpdate\AU\".

Now automatic restarting is gone, but there is still a box that pops up
every so often that says "updating your computer is almost complete. You must
restart your computer for the updates to take effect" and then asks me if I
want to restart now or restart later. If I click restart later, then the box
just reappears some time later. I am grateful that if I don't click anything,
it doesn't just restart the computer by itself, but I would still like to
stop the box from popping up and bothering me so often. Does anyone know how
to do that?

Thanks.

Andrew

Sorry, the thread was misnamed. I don't want to disable automatic updates. I
want to disable the pop-up box that continually asks me to restart my
computer after an automatic update.

Have you tried restarting the computer? That'll get rid of the pop up.

If you don't want to restart after updating, then configure updates to
notify only and then when you're ready and in a position to restart, then
download and install.

Updates that require a restart are not properly installed until you have
restarted.

Simple solution:
Be smart and change the updates so that you control when they download and
install (it'll still notify you - although if you can remember 'second
tuesday of the month' - you would be generally fine.) Then be wise and
don't *start* that process until you are actually ready.

Yes, I could do either of those things, but it would be much easier if I
could just make the pop-up occur only once. I don't want to have to remember
to install Windows updates.

Guess you missed the fact that if you set it to notify but not download or
install - you'd still be notified, but in complete control. You can also
allow it to download and notify - so you still choose when to install.

Maybe you should review the answer again. ;-)

Additionally - you could stop the Automatic Updates service when you get the
first popup. Should stop the popups - but if you have trouble remembering
to update at all - you may have trouble remembering to reboot. ;-P

Reconfigure AU to the "Notify Only" option, then don't approve the install
of ANY update unless you're ready & willing to reboot.
